Suspect in custody after allegedly shooting Stearns County deputy with compound bow

SAUK CENTRE, Minn. -- A 31-year-old man is in custody after allegedly shooting a Stearns County deputy in the arm with an arrow early Thursday afternoon, Sept. 13.

SAUK CENTRE, Minn. - A 31-year-old man is in custody after allegedly shooting a Stearns County deputy in the arm with an arrow early Thursday afternoon, Sept. 13.

The incident started with a call of a stolen pickup in Osakis and ending with the suspect smashing into a garage in Sauk Centre, according to a Stearns County news release.

The suspect then fled to a home in Sauk Centre. Officers evacuated the immediate neighborhood and began negotiating with the suspect, according to the release.

At around 11 a.m., multiple agencies, including the SWAT team, responded to the scene after reports of shots fired.

The suspect, who has not yet been named by police, allegedly struck Stearns Deputy Paul Orvis with an arrow fired from the homeowners’s compound bow from the second floor of the home, according to the release. More than one officer returned gunfire, Stearns County officials said.

Two hours later, the suspect was taken into custody with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and buttocks and a grazing wound on one of his hands, the sheriff’s office said.

Orvis was sent to a Sauk Centre hospital and then transferred to another hospital. The deputy was listed in good condition, the sheriff’s office said.
