FARGO — A suspect is in custody facing a pending murder charge in connection to a Wednesday, Nov. 13, assault at a north Fargo apartment that left a 64-year-old man dead.
Fargo police say they arrested Darrell Clinton Peterson, 43, for Class AA murder based on evidence detectives gathered and statements Peterson made in an interview with investigators. He was booked into the Cass County Jail late Wednesday night.
Officers were dispatched just before 7 a.m. to Pioneer Manor at 201 11th St. N. for a disturbance, according to the Fargo Police Department. Multiple neighbors said they could hear screams for help coming from an apartment at around the same time.
Upon arrival, officers found a man bleeding from his head. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Police said in the afternoon that the victim, Duane Darling of Fargo, died in the hospital.
City police spokesperson Jessica Schindeldecker said Wednesday that police had "a person of interest" in the case. After receiving a tip, officers found Peterson at a different apartment building and took him into custody.
Fargo police said Darling and Peterson knew each other and that the crime did not appear to be random. Darling’s neighbors said Peterson did not live in the Pioneer Manor and started visiting Darling within just a few days of the assault.
Peterson was being held in the Cass County jail Thursday night and faces a pending murder charge, according to jail records. Fargo police said detectives will continue to investigate the case and will provide evidence to the Cass County State’s Attorney.
Darling’s death is the fifth Fargo case this year being investigated as a homicide.
