GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — In preparing for a trial beginning next week, the Renville County attorney’s office has filed an amended criminal complaint against Russel Allen Doucette.
Doucette, 39, of Franklin, is charged with manslaughter and criminal vehicular homicide in the death of Randy Lee Oletzke, 59, of Franklin, in July 2017.
The amended complaint lists two felony charges, not the original three.
The felony charges in the amended complaint are second-degree manslaughter with culpable negligence creating unreasonable risk and criminal vehicular homicide for causing a collision and leaving the scene.
The charge that was in the original complaint but not in the amended one is a criminal vehicular homicide felony for failing to notify law enforcement by the quickest means possible.
The charge was removed for technical reasons, said Assistant Renville County Attorney Glen Jacobsen. Jury instruction rules indicated that the two vehicular homicide charges should be combined.
The jury selection in the trial is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 19 in the Yellow Medicine County Courthouse in Granite Falls. The trial has been moved from Renville County to Yellow Medicine County following a defense request for a change of venue.
Doucette is charged with causing Oletzke’s death at the farm site where the two lived near Franklin.
According to court records, Doucette was allegedly trying to drive away from the farm site, and Oletzke was allegedly standing in front of the truck sometime after dusk on July 27, 2017.
Doucette allegedly told investigators he tried to swerve to avoid Oletzke when his truck fishtailed and lost traction.
Doucette allegedly went to a neighbor’s house where he had several drinks. In a recorded statement described in the criminal complaint, he told authorities that he was “pretty sure” he had run over Oletzke. The complaint states that he failed to stop at the scene and investigate what had been struck, as is required by law.
