MOORHEAD — Authorities are investigating an assault in Moorhead that left a man dead Thursday, June 4, city police said.
The Moorhead Police Department released few details Friday but identified the victim as Richard Alhag Stephen, 33, of Fargo, and described the assault as "significant." It occurred at 1615 20th St. S., an apartment complex in Moorhead.
Stephen and his girlfriend were attacked as they walked back to his girlfriend's apartment late Wednesday night, according to a GoFundMe page created by Stephen's sister to raise funds for the funeral.
Two men and one woman in a vehicle approached the couple and began insulting and cat-calling the girlfriend, who then "told them off," the page said. This angered the two men, who then assaulted Stephen, severely injuring him and causing him to lose consciousness, according to the page. The woman allegedly attacked the girlfriend, leaving her with minor injuries.
When Stephen regained consciousness, his girlfriend took him back to her apartment, according to the page. Stephen would later be brought to a Fargo hospital where he was pronounced dead Thursday morning.
Moorhead police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the case and have identified "persons of interest," said police, who did not release the names of those people.
Police are communicating with the Clay County Attorney's Office about the case.
There is no continued threat to the public, police said.
