FARGO — Law enforcement officials are investigating a forgery scam involving counterfeit checks from the Cass County Jail.
Multiple cases involving the checks, with the fake signature of Sheriff Jesse Jahner, are being cashed at businesses and banks.
Those receiving the checks are asked to call the jail at 701-271-2918 to verify the legitimacy of the check to be cashed. Jail staff can do a quick records check and ensure the check was issued by the sheriff's department.
The sheriff's office said that the checks mirror the current layout of the standard check that is issued to individuals upon their release from the jail. Thus, the check appears to come from a legitimate government agency.
The sheriff's office and Fargo police are working on the case.
Anyone who finds a fake check is asked to call the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at 701-451-7660 and try to offer a description of the person or if possible the vehicle they were driving.
