FARGO — Police have identified the man killed in a weekend shooting outside a Fargo nightclub as a 28-year-old employee of the establishment but had not found a suspect as of Monday evening, May 24.

Dominique Dewayne McNair, 28, died after the early Sunday shooting outside the Africa International Restaurant and Nightclub at 4554 Seventh Ave. E., according to a news release issued Monday by the Fargo Police Department. Police continue to investigate the killing, the release said.

“The person or people involved in this shooting showed an obvious disregard for public safety, and until they are in custody, there is a risk to the public,” police said. “The department’s priority is the safety of the community, and (we) will continue to diligently investigate this incident.”

It’s unclear what led to the shooting or how many people were involved. Police said McNair is an Africa employee and that he was working the night he was shot dead. The restaurant did not return a message left by The Forum seeking comment.

Police responded to the nightclub and restaurant after 2 a.m. Sunday to investigate the shooting that happened in a parking lot west of the establishment. Police released few details about the shooting Monday, as officers still were conducting interviews, reviewing video and taking measures to identify those involved in the killing.

In what appeared to be a memorial, someone tied silver and blue star-shaped balloons to a tree in the parking lot west of Africa outside the Fargo branch of the North Dakota Motor Vehicle Division office. The apparent memorial also displayed flowers, candles and a black cap with a Chicago Blackhawks hockey team logo.

The motor vehicle agency is in a strip mall in the Westfield Business Park, which sits just west of Africa. A glass door to the Kinder Kloset, a pre-owned children’s clothing store located in the same strip mall, was shattered from an apparent gunshot.

Police said several vehicles and people were seen leaving the parking lot at the time of the shooting, but no vehicles have been identified as belonging to suspected shooters, according to the release.

“At this time, we do not have any new, verified and actionable information to provide the community,” the release said. “Once we do, that information will be shared with the media and public. Until then, any information that is shared by the media or public, which is not verified by the police department, may be considered compromising to the investigation.”

The department asked anyone with information on the shooting to call 701-241-1405 or to text tips to 847411 with the keyword FARGOPD.
