MOORHEAD — The fatal shooting happened Friday evening, Sept. 10, in the south Moorhead neighborhood where Amelia Wheeler was visiting Monday afternoon.
Though several days had passed since the shooting, Wheeler was still being careful as she walked to her car in the parking lot of an apartment building where she was visiting someone she knows.
Wheeler, who lives in Fargo, was visiting the same acquaintance Friday evening when they heard gunshots.
It wasn't long before police swarmed the area and Wheeler said she later learned that a man, identified by police as Abdi Mohamed Abdi, 32, of Fargo, had been killed not far from the apartment she was visiting.
Following the shooting, Moorhead police said officers who arrived at the scene after gunshots were reported found a bystander treating Abdi for his wounds, though attempts to resuscitate Abdi were unsuccessful.
Police said Abdi was found near the intersection of 17th Street and 30th Avenue South about 8 p.m. Friday.
On Monday afternoon, a man who is a resident of the area, but who declined to identify himself, said it was his understanding the shooting took place in a parking lot and the victim walked a short distance before collapsing.
The man, who said he has lived in an apartment in the area for about five years, said the neighborhood doesn't see too many problems, but added that Friday's incident has made him worry.
Wheeler said she feels the same way, adding that she was in the neighborhood early Sunday morning when gunshots were heard again.
Because of all the gunfire, Wheeler said her acquaintance who lives in an apartment near where Friday night's shooting occurred is now looking for a new place to live.
"She's scared," Wheeler said of her acquaintance. "She said, 'I need to get out of this place.'"
According to authorities, Moorhead police, the Clay County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are following several leads from the shooting Friday evening, but as of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been announced.
Messages were left with Moorhead police Monday regarding whether any reports of gunfire in the neighborhood late Saturday or early Sunday had been received, but at the time this story was published a response had not been received.
The neighborhood has seen other violence, including on May 5, when a taxi driver, Abdullahi Mohamed Abdullahi, of Moorhead, was shot to death after responding to a call for a pickup at 3015 20th St. S.
Two people have been charged in Clay County District Court in connection with Abdullahi's death.
