Southeast South Dakota man accused of tying up, threatening woman

MITCHELL, S.D. — A Mitchell man was arrested Sunday, Jan. 20, for allegedly tying up a woman and threatening her with a knife and a gun.

The incident reportedly began when 23-year-old Jose Ortiz Rodriguez and the woman had a verbal argument while shopping on Sunday, and the two got into a vehicle and continued the argument in a parking lot.

The woman fled from the vehicle, and Ortiz Rodriguez found her and got her into an apartment. According to court documents, inside the apartment, Ortiz Rodriguez tied the woman’s hands with a torn shirt and headband and tied another shirt around her mouth.

He allegedly pointed a knife at the woman’s chest while threatening her, then got more upset and pointed a gun at her chest and forehead. Police later found a hydrocodone pill in the apartment.

Ortiz Rodriguez is charged with second-degree kidnapping and domestic abuse - aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, both of which are Class 3 felonies. He is also charged with possession of a controlled substance in schedules I or II, a Class 5 felony.
