FARGO — A 27-year-old Fargo woman was sentenced Tuesday, Feb. 12, for child neglect after initially being accused of sexual molestation.
Cass County District Judge Susan Bailey sentenced the woman, Habonimana Trifonia, to 193 days in jail followed by two years of supervised probation on a felony count of child neglect.
Trifonia was given credit for having already spent 193 days in jail.
Trifonia was charged in July with gross sexual imposition, but the charge was amended at Tuesday's hearing to child neglect.
According to the original charging documents, the victim, who's either 7 or 8 years old, told authorities Trifonia inappropriately touched her, showed her inappropriate videos and told her not to tell anyone.
Trifonia knew the victim and her mother, court records show.
Prosecutor Reid Brady said the original charge was changed to child neglect because if the case went to trial, the state worried testimony from one witness could be perceived as being different from what the witness had said earlier in the investigation.
