FARGO — Two people have been arrested in rural Cass County after a search sparked by a theft from the Walmart in Jamestown.

Dejon Demarcus Johnson, 22, and Tiffaney Ashley Simmons, 21, were arrested about 11:15 a.m. Thursday, April 4, after authorities found them at an abandoned farmstead in rural Wheatland that had been forcibly entered, according to a sheriff's office report.

Johnson and Simmons, both of Detroit, Mich., were located about 3 miles from their abandoned vehicle, the report said.

The two were each booked into the Cass County Jail on suspicion of burglary and criminal mischief. "The local charges stem from making entry into the farmstead and the damage sustained; it is not known what charges each individual will face from the incident in Jamestown," the report stated.

Earlier Thursday morning, the sheriff's office issued a "shelter in place" warning for people living in rural Cass County southwest of Casselton. The concern was over a suspect or suspects involved in a theft at the Jamestown Walmart. The warning has since been lifted.

The theft was reported shortly before 3 a.m. from the Jamestown Walmart, said Jamestown Police Sgt. Bob Schlenvogt.

Schlenvogt said he believed cellphones were stolen from the store and at least one of them contained a tracking device. The North Dakota Highway Patrol initiated a pursuit of the suspect’s vehicle after it was tracked traveling east on Interstate 94, the sergeant said.

Law enforcement stopped chasing the vehicle after speeds reached about 120 mph.

Cass County deputies then tracked the vehicle south of I-94, near 146th Avenue Southeast and 40th Street Southeast. Law enforcement found the vehicle unoccupied south of the Absaraka interchange.

Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner said a drone and police dog helped with the search. He said the two suspects were ultimately found in a home near 147th Avenue and 41st Street Southeast.
