GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks School Board on Tuesday, Jan. 21, voted to keep a north-side elementary school open, at least for the time being.
The board voted unanimously Tuesday to keep West Elementary open and have the issue looked at by a task force — part of the community engagement process related to an upcoming referendum, likely to happen later this year or in 2021.
All nine board members were present.
The future of West has been an issue in recent months as the board considered closing the north-side school in light of its $2.4 million in deferred maintenance and relatively low enrollment.
But many opposed the idea, including parents and others who expressed their opinions in recent weeks at meetings and in media reports.
