DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — A Devils Lake high school student's slavery-referencing prom proposal is being addressed by school officials after an image of the invite circulating online prompted outrage.

The picture, which has been shared on Facebook and Snapchat, shows a teen asking a fellow student to prom with a cotton ball-covered sign.

It reads: “If I was black I’d be picking cotton. But I’m white so I’m picking you! Prom?”

The word "cotton" is written entirely in cotton balls.

Superintendent Scott Privratsky said the school district would not comment on student discipline, but Devils Lake High School Principal Ryan Hanson said the school was investigating and that the district had planned a Monday, Feb. 24, meeting to discuss the incident.

Students at Devils Lake High School who wish to remain unnamed said the prom proposal does not reflect on the school and that the student who made it has a history of making racist comments.

Members of the Devils Lake School Board couldn't be reached for comment on Monday.
