BISMARCK -- Annaliese Rauschenberger, an eighth-grader at South Prairie School in Minot, won the 2019 North Dakota Spelling Bee on Monday, March 18, in Bismarck.

Rauschenberger, who represented Ward County, correctly spelled microbial in the 19th round to edge Chris Fleig, a Dickinson Middle School eighth grader.

Timi Shorunke of Cass County finished in third place. He is a seventh grader at Ben Franklin Middle School in Fargo. Mackenzie Schoonover, a seventh-grader from Kidder County Schools in Steele and representing Kidder County, finished fourth.

The spelling bee competition consisted of two parts – a written test and oral spelldown.

Five students were recognized for achieving perfect scores (50 of 50) on the Spelling Words portion of the written test. They are Fleig, Shorunke, fourth-grader Chinmay Gopi of Dakota Montessori School in Fargo, seventh-grader Andrew Fritel of Killdeer and sixth-grader Luke Wegner of Our Redeemer’s Christian School in Minot.
