FARGO—Thirteen cats died in a fire at a rural south Fargo home Saturday, April 1, but no other injuries were reported, the Cass County Sheriff's Office said.

Multiple first responders were called out to the home in the 800 block of 88th Ave. S. shortly before 6:30 p.m.

The fire was contained to a lower kitchen area of the residence but there was widespread smoke damage throughout the entire house. The homeowners were home at the time, the sheriff's department said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
