FARGO — New artwork now adorns the inside and outside of Fargo's city commission chambers.

The change is in keeping with a decision made when Fargo City Hall was constructed: Every three years the city would feature new art on the prominent illuminated panels on both the exterior and interior of the commission chambers.

In May, art proposals were solicited from artists, culture bearers and other creative individuals and 29 proposals were received.

A five-person panel composed of artists and arts advocates reviewed the proposals and pared the list down to two artists whose proposals were forwarded to the Fargo Arts & Culture Commission for final approval.

The artists selected to receive contracts were Brett Lysne, whose work now graces the exterior of the commission chambers, and Troy Becker, whose work is displayed inside the commission chambers.

Lysne's art follows the theme of Fargo: past, present and future, while Becker's work reflects the themes of recreation, arts and entertainment, agriculture and parks.

Lysne was paid $24,000 for his artwork. Becker received $8,000.

Their works were recently installed in City Hall by Office Sign Company and Custom Graphics.

Lysne and Becker share similar backgrounds as illustrators and graphic designers.

Lysne creates custom work through his illustration and graphic design studio, Sandwich Club Design.

Becker has been an illustrator, cartoonist and graphic artist for Forum Communications for nearly 15 years.

According to information provided by the city of Fargo, the Fargo Arts and Culture Commission was established in 2015 and is committed to highlighting and expanding culture and arts in collaboration with citizens, artists, culture-bearers, organizers, business partners and City leaders.

The panel that reviewed proposals and chose Lysne and Becker as finalists for contracts included: Brad Bachmeier, artist, arts educator and representative of the Arts & Culture Commission; Richard Kendra O’Brien, arts advocate; Richard Moorhead, architect; Arlette Preston, city commissioner; and Franklin Ugochukwu, artist.
