BISMARCK — The North Dakota Legislature is considering a bill that would help cover costs for couples looking to adopt, but only if the couple adopting is married and heterosexual.
The bill also covers pregnancy costs when a mother decided to make an adoption plan for their baby.
The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition opposes the bill, saying it excludes single parents, unmarried couples and same-sex couples, keeping children out of loving homes.
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Jeff Hoverson, R-Minot, says that he chose to only include heterosexual couples to gain support of religious members of the House.
"We want to care about both the baby and the mother," Hoverson told WDAY News. "If there is a new couple involved and willing to step into this, we want to make that easier as well.
