ND Cannabis Caucus collects signatures to get recreational marijuana on the state ballot for 2020

FARGO — Holiday shoppers were asked to add their signature to more than just their credit card receipts at the West Acres mall on Friday, Nov. 22.

Shoppers were asked to sign a petition in support of a constitutional amendment to legalize all forms of recreational marijuana by representatives from North Dakota Cannabis Caucus.

Another local recreational marijuana support group, Legalize ND, had a ballot measure fail on this same issue in 2016. This group is also planning to put the bill forth again in 2020.

North Dakota Cannabis Caucus has made changes to the potential bill. They think these changes will lead to an increase in public support. As of today, 6,000 people have signed the petition in Fargo alone.

"We've just had a great response," said Lisa Smith of N.D. Cannabis Caucus. "I feel like North Dakota is ready for this."

Smith said they will need 27,000 signatures to put the recreational marijuana issue back on the ballot. Although, she estimates the group will receive 30,000 signatures from all across North Dakota.
