Where are North Dakota's best high schools? Find the latest rankings here

Schools in West Fargo, Casselton, Hawley and more also made the top 10 in the rankings based on test performance, graduation rates, college preparedness.

FARGO — Fargo North High School receives high marks and is ranked tops among area high schools in the latest U.S. News & World Report review of schools around the country.

U.S. News, which was once a print magazine and is now a web-based publisher, also ranked North High as the No. 1 high school in North Dakota and at 2,200th among high schools nationally.

The publisher ranks schools on their performance on state-required tests, graduation rates and how well a school prepares students for college.

In the latest school review, Northern Cass High School in Hunter, N.D., placed second among area high schools, while Fargo's Davies High School ranked third.

Hawley (Minn.) High School ranked fourth, West Fargo's Sheyenne High School ranked fifth and Central Cass High School in Casselton, N.D., ranked sixth.

Moorhead High School was seventh among area high schools in the latest rankings from U.S. News. The area schools Top 10 was rounded out by Barnesville (Minn.) High School, eighth; Kindred (N.D.) High School, ninth; and Maple Valley High School in Tower City, N.D., tenth.

Fargo's South High School was ranked 11th among area schools.

The U.S. News website indicates that while Fargo North's graduation rate of about 92% placed it in a tie for 70th place in North Dakota, the school ranked first in the state in the areas of college readiness and college curriculum breadth.

The Math and Science Academy in Woodbury, Minn., topped Minnesota's secondary schools in the U.S. News annual review. Moorhead High ranked 93rd among other Minnesota high schools and 5,196th among high schools nationwide.

An area high school that ranked relatively high among Minnesota's secondary institutions was Detroit Lakes High School, which landed at No. 36 in the U.S. News rankings.

Nationally, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va., ranked first among high schools across the country, according to the U.S. News review.
