Man, toddler injured in Fergus Falls house fire

A home caught fire due to a child playing with a lighter, according to firefighters in Fergus Falls.

FERGUS FALLS, MINN. — A home was damaged by fire and two of its occupants were injured Sunday, Feb. 14.

Investigators later found that the fire started when a child was lighting paper on fire in a bedroom.

The Fergus Falls Fire Department said the fire was located on the second floor of the home on West Douglas Avenue. When police and fire crews arrived, they could see smoke coming from the window.

The family was able to make it out, but 26-year-old William Anderson and a 2-year-old were injured in the fire. Authorities said they were taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for critical burns.

A woman and two other children were also taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The fire was under control in about ten minutes, and the damage was confined to one room of the home. Damages are estimated at $20,000.
