BECKER COUNTY, Minn. — A driver was arrested after leading police on a lengthy high-speed chase Tuesday, March 28, in Becker County.

A state trooper put a callout for assistance after clocking a Dodge Charger driving over 100 mph just west of Frazee on County Highway 10.

The speeding driver, 20-year-old Bobby James Newborn, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, was first spotted around 4:24 p.m. Tuesday, according to a report from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office. The Dodge was sighted once more by a Becker County Sheriff sergeant before turning onto U.S. Highway 10, fleeing westward.

Despite hitting tire deflation devices set up by deputies on the intersection of County Highway 54 and U.S. Highway 10, the suspect continued heading west.

Detroit Lakes police set up another tire deflation device at the overpass of U.S. Highway 10 and Roosevelt Avenue, but the driver once again drove through and continued westward.

“At this point, the decision was made to terminate the pursuit,” the report said.

Once the Dodge passed U.S. Highway 59 while still traveling west on U.S. Highway 10, officers reengaged their pursuit before the speeding vehicle entered the ditch just east of West Long Lake Road, according to the report.

Finally, officers were able to arrest Newborn for fleeing a police officer, felony possession of marijuana and outstanding felony warrants. An unnamed passenger was released without criminal charges, the report added.

No one was hurt during the incident, and no damage was sustained to other vehicles besides Newborn's Charger.

The case remains under investigation.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
