BATTLE LAKE, Minn. — Authorities have identified two people who died in a murder-suicide this week.

Steven Kern, 59, and Susan Kinnunen, 58, were found dead Monday, Nov. 21, at a rural Battle Lake home, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials did not release details regarding who killed the other person before taking their own life. Also unknown was the motive, a cause of death, a specific address of the home, the relationship between Kinnunen and Kern.

The sheriff’s office did say investigators believe the deaths were a murder-suicide and that there is no threat to the public.

Seeking more details, The Forum reached out to the sheriff's office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is assisting in the investigation.

"This investigation is still in its very early stages," BCA spokeswoman Jen Longaecker said. "I do not have any further information I can provide at this time."

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
