DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — The three North County Trail Association chapters in North Dakota plan to host a virtual event to showcase volunteer opportunities on the North Country National Scenic Trail on Sunday, April 23.
The event is free and open to the public, and is slated for 7 p.m. The virtual program will cover the trail's history and management, its route across North Dakota, and how volunteers can help build and maintain the trail, according to a press release from the North Country Trail Association (NCTA).
The NCTA is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that attempts to build, maintain, promote and protect the trail. The three NCTA chapters in North Dakota are: the Central Flyway Chapter, Sheyenne River Valley Chapter and Dakota Prairie Chapter.
Administered by the National Park Service, the North Country Scenic Trail (NCT) stretches 4,800 miles from Lake Sakakawea State Park near Pick City, North Dakota, to the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. About 475 miles of the trail are located in North Dakota, according to the press release.
"There are opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to make a meaningful contribution to completing the NCT in North Dakota," said Mark Zimmerman of the Central Flyway Chapter, based in Riverdale, North Dakota.

The event will discuss what resources exist to help volunteers do their work safely and what volunteer opportunities currently exist. The information will be followed by question and answer segment, and then breakout sessions with each chapter to discuss specific details.
