MOORHEAD — First responders are training for the unthinkable in Moorhead this week, hoping they will never have to use the skills they are learning.
Active shooter training started on Monday, July 18, and will run through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. During that period, Ridgewood Boulevard from 36th Street South to 40th Street South will be closed to traffic.
Five area police departments along with the Moorhead Fire Department and Sanford Ambulance are taking part in this training. The real-life simulation has live shooting with plastic ammunition and school staff acting as victims as the situation unfolds.
Seargant Scott Kostohryz with the Moorhead Police Department says those involved say doing this now is more important than ever.
"Doing this training in Clay County and Cass County has been doing this as well for as long as I have been there over 20 years," he said. "So this is nothing new, it is just kind of more relevant with the summer that we have been having in this country."
