MOORHEAD — The Moorhead School District has received $116,903 in state funds to add cameras and upgrade video recording for stop signs that extend from the sides of school buses.

The district joined a group of 27 schools and transportation companies that were awarded the grants from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The program is aimed at holding motorists accountable when they do not stop for buses, the school district said.

Minnesota law requires drivers to stop for school buses when the vehicle’s flashing lights are activated and the stop arm is extended.

“In Moorhead, once the project is completed, 100% of the MAPS bus fleet, including district-owned and contractor-owned buses, will have front- and rear-facing stop arm cameras and upgraded recording equipment,” the school district said in a statement.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
