MOORHEAD — A man accused of shooting and killing another man at point blank range here in September is out of jail on $1 million bail.

Idris Abdillahi Haji-Mohamed, 26, of Rochester, Minnesota, is charged in Clay County District Court with one count of second-degree murder following the shooting on Sept. 10.

A judge set his bail at $2 million with no conditions or $1 million with conditions.

According to court records, Haji-Mohamed obtained a $1 million bond from Midwest Bonding, posted on Sept. 17, and was subsequently released from the Clay County Jail. Defendants must often pay a minimum of 10% of the bail amount to be released.

Under the conditions of his release, Haji-Mohamed must stay in Minnesota unless given court approval, keep the court informed of his current address, remain law-abiding, make all future court appearances and maintain contact with his attorney.

Before his release, Haji-Mohamed applied for representation by a public defender. Court documents filed Sept. 15 indicated he was eligible and approved for a public defender because he did not have "sufficient income or assets" for his defense.

However, a private attorney from Rochester, James McGeeney, who the court did not appoint, is now representing Haji-Mohamed instead.

The shooting

Authorities took Haji-Mohamed into custody in Rochester on suspicion of second-degree murder a few days after the fatal Moorhead shooting.

Around 8 p.m. on Sept. 10, police responded to a report of gunshots near 17th Street and 30th Avenue South in south Moorhead.

When officers arrived, they found a bystander trying to treat a person who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Attempts to resuscitate the victim, 32-year-old Abdi Mohamed Abdi, were unsuccessful.

Surveillance video obtained from a nearby apartment complex shows a man chasing Abdi, who ended up on the ground.

The assailant is then seen on video firing about five bullets point blank into Abdi's body, killing him.

Authorities identified Haji-Mohamed as a suspect based in part on a wallet recovered at the scene.

McGeeney, Haji-Mohamed's attorney, said when someone is accused of a heinous crime, they're often painted in a negative light by people who don't know all the facts.

Haji-Mohamed was scheduled for an omnibus hearing in court Oct. 7, but a continuation has been granted to allow more time for the prosecution and defense to process evidence.

That hearing is now set for Dec. 6.
