Starting October 1, a Real ID will be needed to go through TSA screening at airports.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation say they are preparing for a busy summer leading up to the deadline.

By the deadline, a Real ID, passport, military, or tribal ID will be required to fly on an airplane.

The original deadline was pushed back a year because of the pandemic.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation recommends people shouldn't delay in making an appointment online. While there are currently many appointment times available now, as the deadline approaches, getting an appointment might be more difficult in September.

"The most amount of time to get a Real ID is going to be you finding all these documents," said NDDOT drivers license division director Brad Schaffer. "Because once you have all these documents, coming into our office is really a painless process. You should be out in about 10 minutes."

Schaffer says after you've applied for a Real ID once, you don't need to bring in the extra documentation again.
