STUTSMAN COUNTY, N.D. – The name of a man killed in a vehicle crash just south of Jamestown on Tuesday, Sept. 20, has been released.

Ross Bergquist, 37, from Jamestown, was pronounced dead after the crash, according to a release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Bergquist had been driving a freightliner box truck southbound on Highway 281 when he struck a Volvo fuel tanker driven by Cristopher Anderson, 52, from Jamestown.

The Volvo had slowed down to make a left turn around mile marker 64.2 when the freightliner, which was traveling behind the Volvo, attempted to swerve into the west ditch to avoid hitting the Volvo that had slowed down, according to the release.

There was not sufficient time to avoid a collision, and the freightliner rear ended the Volvo. The Volvo completed the left-hand turn and came to rest in the driveway, while the freightliner flew into the west ditch.

Bergquist, who was wearing a seat belt, had to be extricated from the freightliner before being transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center where he later died, the release said.

Anderson was not injured and was also wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
