FARGO — The public is invited to a ceremony in Fargo on National Vietnam War Veterans Day to remember and thank those who served in Vietnam.

The Vietnam War Commemoration will be held Wednesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m. at the Fargo National Cemetery, 8709 40th Ave. N., County Road 20, near Harwood.

Vietnam veteran Ron Freed will be the guest speaker and the 119th Civil Air Patrol will hold a missing man table ceremony in remembrance of fallen, missing or imprisoned service members.

The Fargo Memorial Honor Guard will perform military honors.

Brandy Pyle, a Fargo National Cemetery volunteer committee member and Republican state representative from Casselton, said it’s important to honor those who came home and those who did not.

“It is vital… for everyone, especially our younger people, to understand what true sacrifice means and what those men and women gave up, what their families gave, so that we could be here and be free in our country,” Pyle said.

The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration is a national 50th anniversary commemoration authorized by Congress, which is supporting nearly 1,000 ceremonies throughout the U.S. on National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

Its objectives include to thank and honor Vietnam War veterans and their families, to recognize contributions made on the home front and to highlight advances in technology, science and medicine related to military research conducted during the war.

The nearly five acre Fargo National Cemetery is the first national cemetery built in North Dakota, part of the VA National Cemetery Administration Rural Initiative to provide access to VA burial benefits for Veterans who’ve not previously had reasonable access to a national or state veterans cemetery.

The cemetery was dedicated on Sept. 7, 2019.
