MANDAN, N.D. — A young child died Monday in Mandan after falling off a Fourth of July parade trailer, police said in a news release.

Mabel Askay of Ventura, California, was on the trailer as parade entrants drove toward the staging area for the Independence Day event slated to begin around 10 a.m. Monday.

An hour before the parade’s start, the 6-year-old girl fell off the trailer, which ran her over on Longspur Trail Southeast, the release said.

Mabel was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

It is unclear which parade entry was involved in the incident, but the girl was part of the group riding the trailer. Police are still investigating the death.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to raise money for Mabel's family.
