One dead, 4 hurt in head-on crash near Rolla, N.D.

All occupants had to be extricated from the vehicles.

ROLLA, N.D. — A fatal, head-on crash was reported near Rolla, North Dakota, on Monday, Sept. 13.

According to a release by the North Dakota Highway Patrol, just after 8 a.m. a 2018 Dodge Caravan was driving east on U.S. Highway 281. At the same time, a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee was headed west on the same highway.

A third vehicle was waiting to turn left onto 52nd Avenue Northeast and yielding to the Jeep. The Dodge tried to pass the third vehicle, with the Jeep and the Dodge colliding head-on.

The driver of the Jeep, 22-year-old Charles Vondal Jr., was reported to have serious injuries. The driver of the Dodge was fatally injured. In the van were three passengers: 39-year-old Elizabeth Yoder, a 7-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy. All three were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. All occupants had to be extricated from the vehicles.

Authorities plan to release the name of the man killed after notifying his family.
