ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Andrew Peters of Rochester Public Schools received first place in the Multi-Regional State Spelling Bee here.

Peters correctly spelled "fritillary," meaning any of numerous nymphalid butterflies that usually are orange with black spots on the upper side of both wings and silver spotted on the underside of the hind wing. He will compete in the 77th annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Second place winners are Nathan Cornelius, Marshall Area Christian Home Educators' Association, Julia Franz, St. John's Preparatory School, Collegeville, and Narendra Hazareesingh, Duluth Marshall School.

Third place winners are Joe Popham, Duluth Marshall School, and Heather Zinda, Roseau Public Schools.

Jenna Strege of Perham won a Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, donated by Merriam-Webster.
