South Dakota growing quickly, but still ranks 46th among states for population

The U.S. Census Bureau released state population counts on Monday. While Montana gained a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, South Dakota will remain one of six states with only one representative in the lower chamber of Congress.

PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota will — officially — hit 50 years with only one representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, after numbers from the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau released on Monday, April 26 confirmed what most observers expected, that the state's population is still among the nation's smallest.

Data released by Census officials on Monday show that the state was in the top-half of population growth across the country. Between 2010 and 2020, South Dakota grew 8.9%, from 814,180 to 866,667 persons.

But the growth trailed its northern neighbor, North Dakota, which grew by 15.8% to 779,094.

South Dakota lost a member in the U.S House after the 1980 Census, according to the newly released congressional apportionment data, will stay with one member until at least 2030.

"Since 1940, there's been a combined net shift of 84 seats to the south and west regions," said Ron S. Jarmin , acting director of the U.S. Census Bureau during a Monday press event.

South Dakota's northwestern neighbor, Montana, gained a member in the U.S. House. Other states gaining one seat include Colorado, Florida, North Carolina and Oregon. Texas gained two seats.

The population over the last decade has actually dipped in Illinois, West Virginia and Mississippi, while population grew most rapidly in Idaho and Utah.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo noted the delay in disclosing data caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but celebrated the data as a "complete and accurate census count."

Later this year, city-specific data and other demographic information will be released.
