A South Dakota man died in a crash between a pickup and a tractor pulling a grain cart Monday night in Richland County.
William Larson, 64, of New Effington, S.D., died at the scene.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the accident happened at about 9:38 p.m. Monday on State Highway 18, one and a half miles north of the South Dakota border.
A 1997 Dodge pickup, driven by Larson, was southbound on Highway 18 when it encountered the tractor and grain cart, driven by Mike Meyer of Wahpeton, N.D., also in the southbound lane. The vehicle ran into the rear of the grain cart and became lodged under it. Both vehicles came to rest on the highway, facing south.
The tractor and grain cart were equipped with lighting devices. It did not appear the vehicle driven by Larson took evasive action.
Alcohol use by Larson was a factor in the crash, the highway patrol said. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The front-end of the vehicle sustained severe damage. There was minor damage to the tractor and grain cart.
