SUV hit by train in Grand Forks on Sunday morning

GRAND FORKS — A gray 2012 Chevy Equinox was hit by an eastbound BNSF train when it drove through a railroad crossing arm on S. 42nd St. in Grand Forks a little before 11 a.m. Sunday morning.

The driver, 87-year-old Theresa Knutson, of Grand Forks, was transported to Altru hospital, though her injuries did not appear to be serious, according to Grand Forks police.

WDAY spoke with Grand Forks police who say Knutson went through the crossing guard driving north when her SUV was hit by the train.

Her vehicle was pushed off the roadway and onto BNSF property, east of N. 42nd St.

The BNSF train was traveling eastbound at approximately 10 mph on the north set of tracks when it made contact with Knutson’s vehicle. There were no reported injuries or damages from BNSF staff.

The driver will be cited for the incident for failure to obey railroad crossing.
