Across our region, from southern Canada through the Central Plains and from the Rockies to the western Great Lakes, the weather has been colder than average since the beginning of the year.
However, the weather over both the western and eastern United States has been remarkably warm, as has most of Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. Across the oceans as well, despite a few cold pockets, the weather of 2019 continues to be warmer than average overall. Satellite and instrument data confirm this.
Most of what we talk about and hear lately about our weather is how cold and miserable the winter and spring has been, yet the weather around the world has been mild. These two things can both be happening, but we must be careful to not confuse one with the other. Cold weather in our region should not be taken as a sign that global climate warming is a farce.
