FARGO — Heavy rains soaked parts of the Red River Valley over the last two days, and while there is a chance for rain later in the coming days, the rest of the week looks much drier.

Fargo's airport saw about 2.6 inches of rain in a 48-hour period ending at midnight, with less than half an inch falling Tuesday, July 9, the National Weather Service estimated. Some parts of Fargo reported more than 4 inches of rain, and Moorhead saw more than 4.5 inches.

The weather service station in Grand Forks measured 2.5 inches.

In North Dakota, Harwood reported 4 inches over the 48-hour period ending at 7 a.m. Wednesday, July 10. Manvel saw 3.2 inches, West Fargo received 3 inches, Grandin got 2.5 inches and Wahpeton reported just under an inch, the weather service said.

On the Minnesota side, Glyndon measured 4 inches, Ada and Detroit Lakes received about 3, and Fergus Falls had almost 2.75, according to weather service reports.

The cluster of storms flooded streets, unleashed high winds and raised river levels across the valley. Funnel clouds were spotted in southeast North Dakota near Wahpeton, with reports of a tornado touching down briefly Tuesday night.

The Maple River near Mapleton, N.D., the Sheyenne River in Harwood, N.D., and the Red River in Fargo rose into minor flood stage, the weather service said. Fargo’s Elm Street closed Tuesday evening near 14th Avenue North due to rising water.

At 19.6 feet as of Wednesday morning, the Red was well below this year’s April 8 crest of 35.03 feet. The river is not predicted to rise much above 20.5 feet, but the Red could stay in the minor flood stage for the foreseeable future, according to meteorologists.

Meteorologists expect most of the storms to move out of the area by midday or late afternoon. “Shower activity will be more isolated in west-central Minnesota today,” the weather service said.

Thunderstorms could return to the valley Thursday evening as a warm front moves back into the area, WDAY meteorologist Andrew Whitmyer said.

The rest of the week looks to bring sunny days with some clouds, the weather service said. Expect highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s, meteorologists said.

Still, humidity likely will increase Thursday and stick around for the weekend, Whitmyer said.
