BISMARCK — North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread is urging people to sign up for flood insurance.

Godfread says in a statement that it's important for renters, homeowners, farmers and business owners to understand how at-risk they are for flooding and talk with their insurance agents about what makes sense for them.

Typical homeowner insurance policies don't cover flooding, and due to a 30-day waiting period before flood insurance kicks in, it is important for people to get the coverage now rather than later, Godfread said.

Flood insurance policies can cost anywhere from $500 to a few thousand dollars. More information on flood insurance is available at www.floodsmart.gov.
