WEST FARGO — The man who laid the foundation for the operation of West Fargo Public Schools passed away over the weekend.

Marvin Leidal, 84, West Fargo, died Saturday, July 2, at Sanford Medical Center.

Leidal was a principal and later superintendent for the West Fargo Public School District. The Leidal Education Center, the school district's administration office at 207 Main Ave. W. in West Fargo, is named for him.

Leidal was born March 8, 1938 in Hunter, N.D. After graduating from Hunter High School in 1956, he attended North Dakota State University and earned a bachelor's of education in mathematics.

Leidal was married to his high school sweetheart, Janice Kauth, in 1959. He then graduated from NDSU in 1960 and later continued his education by earning his master's degree in education.

Before his retirement in 1999, Leidal was awarded the Superintendent of the Year for North Dakota in 1999.

Leidal was one of the first nominees of the West Fargo High School Hall of Fame in 2009. Leidal earned many accolades and awards throughout the 20 years he served as superintendent of West Fargo Schools, but he may have been most recognized for his fair and kind personality and leadership style. He encouraged working with Fargo and Moorhead School Districts while ushering the growth of West Fargo.

Even after leaving education, Leidal continued to have an impact on West Fargo and his community. In 2016, he was nominated as a "Senior of the Year," an award that aims to recognize those age 65 and older who have made an outstanding contribution to enrich the social, cultural or civic life of the Fargo-Moorhead area.

"Marvin had education in his heart his whole life, so he continued to stay active in the school community after retirement," his family said in his obituary.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., with a vigil at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 7, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Fargo. A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, at the church. Burial will follow in Hunter Cemetery near Hunter, N.D.
