FARGO - Three of the five finalists for the 2018 North Dakota Teacher of the Year are from Cass County.
The names of the local finalists were announced by the State Department of Public Instruction on Monday, Sept. 18. They are:
• Sandy Evenson, a sixth-grade science teacher at Cheney Middle School in West Fargo.
• Leah Juelke, an English language instructor at Fargo South High School.
• Thomas Klapp, a physics, chemistry and Advanced Placement chemistry teacher at Northern Cass High School in Hunter.

Two other finalists were named earlier. They are:
• Lynae J. Holmen, a special education teacher at Longfellow Elementary School in Minot.
• Heather Tomlin-Rohr, a kindergarten teacher at Louis L'Amour Elementary School in Jamestown.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler has made it a point to visit each finalist in their schools to call attention to each person's achievement, and to draw attention to teaching excellence in the state's public schools.
On Thursday, Sept. 28, Baesler and Gov. Doug Burgum will honor the award winner.
