Four local fast-food restaurants were victimized in the last two days by someone using counterfeit American Express traveler's checks, Fargo police said Monday.

The checks, in $100 denominations, were used for small purchases, the police said in a press release.

The person passing the checks was described as a white woman in her 30s, police said. They added that the woman volunteered what was later determined to be a fake identification card.

The names of the businesses taking the checks were not released.

Police said the checks were of reasonable quality, but some of the printing was blurry and they were missing three security features:

- A centurion watermark

- AMEX security thread in the middle of the check (visible when held to the light)

- Holographic foil showing the centurion, denomination, and AMEX logo.

Local business should carefully scrutinize any traveler's checks they take, particularly large denominations, police said.

Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to contact Fargo police at (701) 241-1405, or if the crime is in progress, to dial 911.
