GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. - A 5-year-old boy drowned Saturday afternoon while swimming in a Grand Rapids lake.
The Grand Rapids Police Department reported that officers were called to Crystal Lake, on the city's north side, about 1:30 p.m. on a report of a possible drowning. Officers who arrived at the scene were told that the boy had slipped under the water while trying to climb atop a raft.
Police officers and other first responders jumped in the water and found the boy. He was transported to Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital, where he later died. The boy's name was not immediately released.
Officials are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the drowning, police said. The police department was assisted at the scene by the Itasca County Sheriff's Office and Meds 1 Ambulance.
