SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Nine more South Dakotans have died due to COVID-19, while hospitals continue to fill up, according to the South Dakota Department of Health, Wednesday, Dec. 8.
The following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Wednesday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.
Vaccinations
INITIAL DOSE ADMINISTERED (IF 2-DOSE VACCINE): 603,399 people, 68.20% of state's population*
FULLY VACCINATED: 490,572 people, 55.50% of state's population
*Note: The percentage presented here via the CDC differs from the state Department of Health percentage posted on its online dashboard, because the department's data indicates percentage of state population age 12 and older, not the state's total population.
Statewide case rates
- NEW CASES: 627 (seven-day daily average: 661)
- CURRENT ACTIVE CASES: 7,752
- TOTAL CASES: 174,416
- TOTAL RECOVERED: 160,280
Active infections in the state now exceed the rate on all but a few days this year. The number of hospitalized South Dakotans is also the highest tally since Jan. 5, prior to when most South Dakotans were eligible for the vaccine.
For the fifth time this month, new infections also outpaced new recoveries.
