Wind gusts up to 50 mph made driving treacherous in the Fargo-Moorhead area Tuesday, prompting a nearly five-hour closure of Interstate 94 and no-travel advisories in northeastern North Dakota.
The Minnesota State Patrol shut down eastbound and westbound lanes of I-94 from Fergus Falls to Moorhead from late morning to early afternoon as whiteout conditions forced vehicles off the road.
Less than a half an inch of snow fell during the storm, which peaked about 8 a.m., said Vince Godon, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, N.D. Freezing rain late Monday night further hampered driving conditions, Godon said.North Dakota transportation officials recommended no travel on Interstate 29 north of Grand Forks, on U.S. 81 from Minto to Joliette, and on North Dakota Highway 5 east of Langdon and from Joliette to the Minnesota line.
