ABERCROMBIE, N.D. - A $1.3 million Fort Abercrombie interpretive center has been dedicated.

The center at the southeastern North Dakota fort includes an exhibit gallery, store, observation deck, and places for offices and storage. Funding came from state, local and federal sources.

Fort Abercrombie in 1858 became the first permanent U.S. Army fort established in what is now North Dakota.

Sen. Kent Conrad, who attended Sunday's dedication, said the center will "tell the fascinating story of Fort Abercrombie and the soldiers who kept watch over America's expansion to the West."
