BATTLE LAKE, Minn. - An Arizona couple's canoe ride turned tragic Monday as their craft capsized on Clitherall Lake, and the 29-year-old man drowned.

The couple paddled out from Scenic Point Resort around noon, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department. The 24-year-old woman told Sheriff Brian Schlueter their craft capsized around 12:30 p.m.

Searchers spotted the man's body with an underwater camera just before 2 p.m., and divers recovered the body about an hour later.

The couple's names were being withheld pending notification of their families.

The sheriff said the woman told him her boyfriend was a weak swimmer. He said she did the best she could to rescue him.

Schlueter said he didn't know what caused the canoe to capsize, however, the wind was blowing hard, causing small whitecaps and choppy waters. Neither person was wearing a life jacket, he said.
