While Emma tops the 2008 Social Security Administration's list for baby girls, Ava is the most popular girl name in both states. It was fifth on the U.S. list.

For boys, Carter and Ethan topped the list in North Dakota and Minnesota respectively. Nationally, Jacob has been the most popular for 10 years. Ethan was third; Carter was 65th.

The top 10 names for girls are similar between the neighboring states,

with eight overlapping names. The states only agreed on three boy names.
