Roger Hoffman of Fargo displays a 4-pound bass that swallowed a sunfish he had caught on Pelican Lake near Ashby Resort in Minnesota recently. The sunfish's tail can be seen sticking out of the bass' mouth. "This bass was not hooked," Hoffman said. "He was holding onto the sunfish that was completely in his mouth." Hoffman was shorefishing for sunfish when this rare event took place. He thought the fish that flashed by a sunfish was a northern. The second time he casted, the bass hit the sunfish again. Eventually, Hoffman caught the sunfish with a crappie jig before the bass latched onto the sunfish again. "He was hungry, he hit it so hard," Hoffman said. "It's something I'll probably never see happen again ... not with a bass." The bass weighed in at exactly 4 pounds before Hoffman released it back into the water. As for the sunfish, Hoffman kept that for the frying pan.
