Listen up, "American Idol" junkies. We're sure you already know that your favorite TV singing competition kicks off its sixth season Tuesday. But here's something you probably didn't know. Over the next four months, you can get your fix of raw local singing talent through an interactive contest playing out largely on in-forum.com.

Your votes will ultimately decide who we crown the first Fargo Star.

So, if you're one of those people who finds yourself watching the show each week, saying "I'm way better than Taylor Hicks," we want to hear from you.

Here's how it works:

Participants upload video clips showing off their a capella singing chops to a site like www.youtube.com , then send the link to us at fargostar@forumcomm.com .

We'll post those clips at in-forum.com, and readers will decide who advances to the final stage of the competition.

The top 10 people selected will perform live at an all-ages event April 27 at The Venue at Playmakers in Fargo. You, the reader, will decide on a winner from among these performers.

Videos will be posted to in-forum.com Jan. 29, with voting starting Feb. 12, when we announce the grand prize.

No, we won't have Simon Cowell or Paula Abdul on hand, but we will have our own panel of local celebrity judges to spice up the night.

If the idea of becoming an instant local celebrity isn't enough to convince you of this opportunity, maybe our grand prize will. Believe us when we say you won't want to pass this up.
