Becker sheriff investigates report of abandoned baby in bucket at 10,000 Lakes Festival

Becker County authorities are investigating a report that the mother of an 11-month-old child was carrying her son around in a five-gallon bucket when she handed him over to a stranger at a music festival near Detroit Lakes Saturday night.

The mosquito-bitten child was wearing a diaper and covered by a towel when his mother, a 29-year-old from Perham, Minn., gave him to a concerned woman who approached her at the 10,000 Lakes Festival at the Soo Pass Ranch, Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon said.

The woman who was given the child contacted event staff and the boy's mother was located and interviewed several hours later, Gordon said.

Gordon declined to identify either of the women, stating the matter was under investigation. The Becker County Attorney's Office will determine whether charges are filed, Gordon said.

It is also possible civil action will be taken in either Becker County or Otter Tail County regarding the future of the child, said Gordon, who added the child was in "good shape."
