FARGO - Democratic activist Paul Begala said he likes the Democrats' odds going into midterm elections this year, providing further motivation to North Dakota Democrats at their state convention today.
While acknowledging that midterm elections historically tend to favor the party out of power, Begala said he thinks Democratic candidates nationwide are proving stronger than the Republican candidates.
The recently enacted health care reform legislation - a recurring topic during this weekend's Democratic-NPL state convention - also weighed heavily in Begala's speech.
"We have so much to celebrate this week," Begala said. "I cannot tell you what it means to finally have health care passed."
He thanked the North Dakota congressional delegation for their support of the legislation and pointed out Rep. Earl Pomeroy, the Democrats' incumbent candidate in the U.S. House race, for his "courage and character and conviction he showed standing up to powerful industries" by voting in favor of the legislation.

Begala also entertained the delegates with quick-witted jokes against national Republicans and conservative media pundits, which drew laughter and applause from the crowd throughout his speech.
